Living by the New Equipment
The nature of ReBirth is that Jesus puts the gift of the Spirit in you, and then you spend the rest of your life learning how to walk in the power of the Spirit.
This is a living room conversation joined already in progress….
…The reason they think that is because all they can see is what they see with their eyes, and it does sort of seem like that to them. “Oh well, you just have a different set of standards than I do.” “You behave different than I do.” “You have a different value system than I do.” But, what they can’t see and what they can’t understand (1 Corinthians 2 says, “They cannot understand. It’s foolishness to them. They don’t have the Spirit, so they can’t understand the Spirit”) is that the nature of the ReBirth is that Jesus puts His Spirit in you and you spend the rest of your life learning how to live by the power of the Spirit.
It’s like God gave you a really complex, powerful computer and an instruction manual. The kinds of things you could do with this computer are unbelievable. You can program it to replicate like on Star Trek and food comes out. You can program it to do many different things. You can fly to another country, walk through walls, or walk on water if you program this computer right. You have a manual, and you have this amazingly complex and powerful piece of hardware that God gave you. But are you going to be able to use it the first day you get this wonderful gift?! No. That’s how you explain this thing called immaturity or failure or foolishness by a Christian. They don’t know how to use this incredible gift from God properly. They’ve never really learned how to use it in areas related to whatever things they’ve recently failed in. Or they’ve forgotten how to use it, or they’re not using it properly and have gotten careless with it.
The Scriptures say, “We’re made perfect and being made holy,”—being made useful is actually the Greek word. So, we’re made perfect, and we’re washed by the Blood of Jesus. Then we spend the rest of our lives learning how to walk in the power of the Spirit. The Gift is given—though not many people know how to use it very well. So this Gift makes us better workers in the workplace. We Shine like stars in the universe, Peter said, so that the pagans even worship God on the day He returns because they see the quality of our lives. There is a quality of life issue, but it’s not that we have a different system of beliefs and a different standard of living, therefore we try harder to live this way instead of that way. No! We have this gift, this amazing computer, and a manual of how to use it. We also have other people who have used it and can give us hints of how to use it. So you take this whole process and you learn how to walk in the power of the Spirit with this Gift you were given on the day you were translated from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of the Beloved Son, (which might be today for you).
So that’s where this whole truth of victory and failure, immaturity and maturity and “How does all that work?” comes from. Well, it’s because of this Gift that is given. There is now the power to do amazing things. Jesus said, “Greater works than the ones I did, you shall do.” What He was saying was He’s giving us the Spirit that He did those things by, and now we just need to learn how to use that Spirit, how to walk in that Spirit—how to be obedient to that Spirit is probably a better way of saying it. In so doing, the ability to walk on water, the ability to overcome sin, the ability to overcome depression, the ability to overcome personality traits and habits and other stupid stuff, the power to overcome sin has now been granted to us. Now, we need to eat our spinach and learn how to use the equipment and learn how to be controlled by the Spirit instead of controlled by our flesh. That’s what happens from the day you have God’s Spirit, until the day you graduate and then become totally in union with His Spirit when you see Jesus face to face. That’s the process, and you spend the rest of your life refining your understanding of how to be led by the Spirit, keep in step with the Spirit, how to walk in the power of the Spirit, be obedient to the Spirit, and how to fellowship in the Spirit.
