A Prayer: We'll Be Exactly Like You
“So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will continue to live in fellowship with the Son and with the Father. And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life that he promised us. “In this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life that He promised us.”
“I’ve written these things to you because you need to be aware that there are those that want to lead you astray. But you’ve received the Holy Spirit and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to convince you of what is true. For the spirit teaches you all things, and what he teaches is true, it’s not a lie. So you continue in what he has taught you, and continue to live in Christ.
“And now dear children, continue to live in fellowship with Christ, so that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame. Since we know that God is always right, we also know that all who do what is right are his children.
“See how very much our heavenly Father loves us? For he allows us to be called his children and we really are. But the people who belong to this world don’t know God, so they don’t understand that we are his children. Yes, dear friends, we are already God’s children, and we can’t even imagine what we will be like when Christ returns. But we do know that when he comes, we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is” (1 John 2:24-3:2).
That last promise, Father, means a tremendous amount to us. It that we will see You as You really are just staggers our imaginations. The earlier promises of the fact that we really are Your children. You’ve lavished Your love on us and You’ve really, really made us Your children. You’ve adopted us and brought us into Your Family and You love us as much as You love your Son, Jesus. That’s a wonderful promise. But that last promise that we read is one that staggers our imagination at times, that the gap between who we are now and who You are will be bridged when we see You. We know that’s only a few years away, and we’re grateful that that’s the case.
Our days are numbered, and we are here to serve You and love You and help others as much as we can in the meantime. But when we see You face to face, that huge gap between where we’re at with all our selfishness and pride and insensitivities and all the junky moods and all that stuff that is so unlike You that brings us so much distress and causes so much difficulty around us…we know that those things are becoming less and less by Your Spirit. But more importantly, when we see You face to face that gap will be bridged entirely. You will melt us away into a trust and a love that allows us, as we see You as you are, we won’t have our defenses up anymore. We won’t mistrust anymore. We will be able to soften our hearts and become like You because we see You and how wonderful and faithful You are, how trustworthy You are and we won’t need the defenses of pride and selfishness anymore. We won’t need to protect ourselves. We won’t need to wonder what people think. We won’t need any of that stuff anymore because we see how wonderful You are. We won’t have to have the barriers anymore, and all the gap between who You are and who we are will melt in the face of Your love and Your faithfulness.
We are grateful that it’s not that much longer from now that we will be exactly like You. The temptations are gone. The fears are gone. The turmoil and faithlessness and jealousy and all the junk that just clutters our minds and our hearts, and makes us tremble and makes us sick and makes us despair, and makes us sorrowful and hurts other people, and wears us out and makes us want to climb under the covers and not come out sometimes...we know just a few more years, a few more months, really, that all that stuff will be over. And surely we want to see Your faithfulness and goodness now, and trust You now, and believe You now, and absorb all that You are now as completely as we can so we can be like You now and obey You now. We want all of that. We want to be able to trust You now, but we know, in spite of our frailties, that when You come and face us and put Your hand on our shoulder and look us in the eye and tell us face to face how much You love us, that all that junk will melt away. And all that You always meant us to be will instantly become who we are. We are grateful for that day and look forward to it. Amen.
I’ll Never Let Go of Your Hand
I know what you’ve been hearing
I’ve seen you hide your fear
Embarrassed by your weaknesses
Afraid to let Me near
I wish you knew how much I longed
For you to understand
No matter what may happen child,
I’ll never let go of your hand(Lyrics by D.F.)
