Worship Brings Joy to His Heart

We see that David was able to totally swing and change the mood of King Saul at different times, that the Spirit of God worked through David, through music. It wasn't just David patting Saul on the back and saying, "Hey, cheer up, old guy." But something about the music that he brought in the stringed instrument was able to actually change and resolve something inside of Saul, at least temporarily, where his misery was turned into something more peaceful. So this invention that God had of music relates somehow in some way to moods. The thing that we just very briefly reflected on last evening when we were talking to God together was that if we're created in God's image, we have moods. God has moods clearly in the Scriptures. That's beyond question. God invented music. God created music. And it has an effect at times on how we feel, whether or not we're at peace within ourselves or strong or encouraged. That it makes a lot of sense that this thing called music, when the Father wants worshippers, He seeks worshippers. It seems pretty evident that worship isn't just a totally random act. It's not just for our entertainment, but actually we can offer something to the Father that has an impact on how He feels. He does have feelings, music does affect how we feel, and I just want to submit to you that the Father seeks worshippers because He wants joy in His own heart. So when we offer songs of praise to Him, I want you to consider the fact that not only are you singing a love song to Him to express yourself, not only does it affect you in measure, certainly to be able to go higher than your own little old self, to get your eyes off of yourself and focus on your Maker, but there's a third effect also of music, and that is we have the potential of bringing joy and happiness to the Father, just as music brings joy and happiness to us in many cases. So it's a gift that we're offering Him, truly, it's not just an expression of selflessness, it is that, it's not just for our sake, it is that too in a sense, but it's actually something that can affect the Father as He is a person and He does enjoy His people and He does want to feel joy, He does desire to feel peace. These are things that He desires and longs for, just as we do, and we can bring Him some measure of that by offering ourselves selflessly to sing to Him in a vertical way. So as we do that, if we do that, and I hope we will, I just want you to think about that. It's not just something where you mouth the words and kind of lip-sync with the song that you've sung a few times before, but that you give Him something that will bring joy to His heart.
