Creation Groaning, Desperate

3/2/2026

Romans 8:19-22

Creation itself, personified, born and existing for such a time as this, is straining and leaning forward and gasping like a child underwater, desperate for a breath of air, in expectation, groaning under decay, yet not in despair—but in labor, awaiting the public unveiling of redeemed, purchased, washed, newly-crowned, royal humanity in glory.

πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις (pasa hē ktisis)—“the whole creation”
συστενάζει (sustenazei)—“groans together”
συνωδίνει (sunōdinei)—“suffers birth pains together”
ἀποκάλυψιν τῶν υἱῶν τοῦ θεοῦ—“the revealing/unveiling of the sons of God”

“For the entire creation waits with outstretched head in eager expectation for the unveiling of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility—not by its own choice, but because of the One who subjected it—in hope that the creation itself will also be set free from its slavery to decay and brought into the freedom of the glory belonging to God’s children. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together and laboring together in the pains of childbirth until now.” (Romans 8:19-22)

“Waits with outstretched head” reflects the vivid Greek word apokaradokia (ἀποκαραδοκία), which literally suggests craning the neck in anticipation.

“Groans together” (sustenazei) implies a shared, corporate sighing—creation participates in a collective anguish.

“Birth pains” (sunōdinei) is not merely suffering—it is labor pain, pointing toward something being born.

“Revealing” (apokalypsis) means an unveiling, as if what is already true becomes openly manifested.
