Yet Another "Shadow" of Spiritual Life, Discovered in Science
3/24/2008
In studying the biology of the human brain and the human eye, Scientists confirm—what we already knew to be true in the Spirit-Realm of His Kingdom and Church.
Here’s what the Scientists have so astutely observed: To be helpful to others, we have to PAY ATTENTION! : )
In the realm of human physiology, our human eyes are primarily apt to only protect their owner. If motion is calculated to be in proximity to the eyes of their owner, and dangerous, our eye’s motion-sensing “rod cells” will fire off an alarm to our brain to take evasive action.
However, as it turns out, Scientists say these motion-sensing rod cells relax and actually “turn off” when our eyes sense only motion seemingly unrelated to our own personal safety or survival.
Knowing this to be true, “Life Guards” at a beach are trained to trick their eyes—by scanning and focusing, scanning and focusing. If they did not force their eyes to carefully focus on details far and near, always scanning—they would never be able to notice a drowning man, amidst throngs of others who are in no current danger. Their motion-sensing rod cells would literally turn off, causing them to be essentially blind to anything other than a “relaxed picture” of dancing, meaningless motion.
In the Spiritual Realm, clearly this is as true as true can be. If we are only looking with glazed, relaxed eyes at the circumstances of peoples’ lives around us, we won’t notice their pain, their needs, their feelings, or spiritual danger created by their patterns, habits, relationships, or circumstances. In the natural realm, apart from scanning and focusing on details, then scanning and focusing again, we are only ever going to notice our OWN “needs” and “pain” and “temptations.” If we are threatened in any way, we may notice if we are in love with Jesus more than ourselves. But, apart from taking willing responsibility in our hearts to care for others, our “eyes” will only see a happy picture of dancing motion around us. We can easily miss entirely someone waving their arms in a desperate cry for help, or stepping into a dangerous life-threatening circumstance in life, business, relationship, vice, or pursuit. Others may “drown” while we are eating popcorn and enjoying the show. OF COURSE drowning alone is not what we would want for our biological children, nor for any of our Daddy’s Children—our siblings in Christ.
We CAN be alert, and care for one another, if we pay attention to the safety of others, and valiantly fight off our inclination to only pay attention to ourselves.
“THIS IS HOW ALL MEN WILL KNOW!”
Little children, love one another, care for one another, protect one another. As God designed us, “we have need of one another.” And so we shall!
“Lift up a signal against the walls of Babylon; Post a strong guard, Station sentries, Place men in ambush! For the LORD has both purposed and performed what He Spoke.”
