Be Sober and Alert

1/18/2026

Three times in Peter’s first letter (apparently he was really Sensing the Need), he calls the Believers to be SOBER.

“Therefore, get your minds ready for action by being fully SOBER, and set your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” (1Peter 1:13)

“For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and SOBER-minded FOR THE SAKE OF PRAYER.” (1Peter 4:7)

“Be SOBER and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.” (1Peter 5:8)

The Greek definitions:
1) to be calm and collected in spirit
2) to be temperate, dispassionate, circumspect
3) of uncertain affinity
4) to abstain from wine (keep sober)
5) to be discreet, watch

Definition 3 really stood out to me: “of uncertain affinity”
To me, that means... “No motors about anything.” My engine only revs up for Jesus, and consequently His People and Purposes as well.

Elsewhere:

“So then we must not sleep (don’t be spiritually dull) as the rest, but must stay alert and sober.” (1 Thessalonians 5:6 )

“But since we are of the Day, we must stay sober by putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, our hope for salvation.” (1 Thessalonians 5:8)

“You, however, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the Good-News-sharing work, fulfill your service.” (2 Timothy 4:5)
