Word of the Day, Choice of the Day: Pioneer

3/2/2012

pioneer

Far from a “loner,” Pioneer was originally a foot soldier: based on Old French peonier, with the first part coming from the Latin for foot. The current meaning developed from foot soldiers who went in advance of a main attacking force to do preparatory work.
