Collapsing Bridges and God's House

I thought it was a striking and timely picture of how God’s Building - His House - can collapse if we are not each responsible with our part in it. The common thread of why the bridges collapsed was NOT usually poor design and engineering, but lack of routine maintenance. Most of them were generally well designed and well built, but they failed to inspect them and make the necessary repairs along the way, so they eventually collapsed without warning and cost lives and multiple millions in damages. It was a spur to me to not rest easy on “the Design is good and biblical” and “it’s served us well this far” without taking very seriously our role in maintaining the structural integrity by upholding our Architect’s Word and heart, rather than blindly “doing what we’ve always done.” One bridge collapsed due to a single crack, another due to one poor weld...both problems that could/should have been dealt with had the bridges been maintained. Our King deserves better than that, and I want to *live out* His Design for Him, not just admire it.

“So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into. You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.” (Matthew 24:42-44)
