Doing the Work of a Priest

Jesus said the two greatest commands are these:

Love Him with ALL that we are
and
Love each other as our own selves

This loving each other, the +1 of daily living, is part of His Plan from the earliest setting apart of His People:

Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’” (Exodus 19:3-6)

He did not call us to be a group of shared beliefs. He did not call us to be a happy club.

He called us to be a “Kingdom of Priests.” Right now, in your life, you are either actively doing the work of a priest every day, as He commands us to do in Hebrews 3... OR you’re outside of the very reason and purpose He made His People, His Treasured Possession. We can’t be along for the ride. We are either doing His work or we are the lazy, slothful servant who has buried the immeasurably, priceless Gifts poured onto his lap. This is not about a frenzied, externally active, police man out to fix everyone. It is about caring deeply in every situation, with observant eyes and prayerful hearts. And a selfless willingness to intervene with courage, wisdom, and love... with believers AND unbelievers as the Opportunities arise. This is not who I’ve always been, but it is who I am and am becoming.

Has He delivered you from “Egypt?” Has He carried you on eagles’ wings? Then, out of gratitude and love, do your part of the covenant. Do the work of a priest.

No fear of man or bridges burned

Exhort daily, snatch from fire

Clean out leaven, draw others higher

Stand in God’s council, in courts Above

Speak truth with boldness, speak truth with love

Oh, priest

Hear the high call

Guard well the wall

Shine light in the dark, uncover the masks

Til Christ is formed and captives released

‘Cause this is your charge, this is your task

Do the uncommon work of God’s holy priest

Intercede at the foot of His throne

Redeem men with blood of your own

Join feeble grips to His strong Hand

When you’ve done all, continue to stand

Oh, priest

Hear the high call

Oh, watchman

Guard well the wall

Shine light in the dark, uncover the masks

Til Christ is formed and captives released

‘Cause this is your charge, this is your task

Do the unflinching work of God’s holy priest

Like our High priest

Be the fierce lion, be the slain lamb

Set yourself apart

For the one true King, for the great I am

Oh, priest

Always stand tall!

Give Him your all

Don’t let them fall
