Following Jesus only when we feel good is goo-goo spirituality. We are goo-goo spiritual when we try to impress others with how much we love God. The best way to get rid of goo-goo spirituality is to humble ourselves and ask Him to teach us and refine us by fire. We can ask as Paul did for the pain to be taken away, but because we want to do God's will, we accept the pain, and worship Him anyway.
