Guarding Affections

10/21/2005

A thought from this morning... If anyone ever asks you, “Where does it ever say you shouldn’t give away your affections to the unsaved?”, you could honestly answer, “Pretty much every page from Genesis to Revelation.” But one clear answer would be to point them to Psalm 15. David asks God, “Lord, who may enter your Holy Tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?” One of the qualifications listed is this: “They do not respect hateful or vile people, but honor those who honor and fear the Lord.” Clearly, if we want a relationship with God, an absolute requirement is that we give our affections only to those who honor Him with their lives. There’s room for “mercy, mixed with fear” towards others, but not for affection, respect and honor. No wonder in the very next Psalm David exclaims, “As for the godly people in the world, they are the ones I enjoy!”
