The Heart of Man is Still the Same Today

I KNOW you all know this but it just has been striking me as I’ve been reading through Acts:

From Acts 5:

“The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people…Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed. Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.”

(Jealousy is really the issue. It has nothing to do with Moses or the law or righteousness.)

“Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. ‘We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.’”

(What they were really saying is we do not want to take responsibility for who this man Jesus is or what we did to him.)

From Acts 6:

“Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen…These men began to argue with Stephen, but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke. Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, ‘We have heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.’ So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. They produced false witnesses, who testified, ‘This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law…’”

(Isn’t it sooooo true even today? If you can’t dispute the message, then discredit and attempt to destroy the messenger. They still work in secret and distort, lie and produce false witnesses and testimonies. They “stir up the people” with their treachery.)

Those are just a few examples. There are many, many more and I know Jesus said if they treated Me this way they will do the same to you (and all those who follow in my footsteps). The heart of men has not changed. Jealousy, not wanting to take responsibility for who this man Jesus is and what that will mean to their lives, wounded pride and not being able to stand against the wisdom or spirit of God is still the root of much persecution. It never really was about protecting Moses and the law and it still isn’t about protecting anything truly of God today. The tactics are the same. The hearts are the same.

This has been standing out to me as I’ve been reading. And, as I said, I know you all already know this but was a good reminder for me.
