“Am I really all that I can be? Am I what, in the bottom of my heart, I honestly know I can be and desire to be? Am I living a life at all like what I myself approve? My secret nature, the true complexion of my character, is mostly hidden from all men, and only I know it. Is it such as I should be willing to show? Is my soul at all like my kindest and most intimate friends believe? Is my heart at all such as I should wish the Searcher of Hearts to judge me by it? Is every year adding to my devotion, to my unselfishness, to my conscientiousness, to my freedom from the hypocrisy of seeming so much better than I am? When I compare myself with last year, am I more ready to surrender myself at the call of duty? Am I more alive to the commands of conscience? Have I offered up and laid aside, as a gift to Jesus, my besetting sins—without compromise or self-justification or procrastination? Am I laying down my life to help others expand their love of Jesus every day, in real, observable ways? Is His everlasting Government expanding, by my daily participation and representation of His ways to and in others? Am I a worshipper, hour after hour, day by day, forever more, regardless of the busyness or difficulties of my day? Do I love with discernment and long-suffering?

These are some questions that we should be putting fairly and honestly to our hearts. And as we allow Jesus to live through us, He will express all of this, and SO much more than all of this—in the environment of affections and admiration of Him we cultivate in our hearts, and in our yieldedness to His gentle whispers.”
