We Are Not Amongst Those Who Shrink Back

4/7/2025

“GOD has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and love and sound mind and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

In 2 Timothy 1:7, the Greek word translated as “fear” is “deilia” (δειλίας), which specifically refers to timidity, being a quitter when challenged, hesitation, cowardice, or lack of courage, rather than terror or reverence. This word is not the more common Greek term for fear, “phobos” (φόβος), which means fear, terror, or reverence depending on context.

Think about situations in your life where this applies. Is it God’s Spirit leading us? Or is it our flesh tempting us to shrink back? “We are not amongst those who shrink back” (Hebrews 10:39). 4:55 p.m.
