The Scriptures are THE Roadmap

1/11/2011

Can you help with one thing? I have recently met another group of young people who “left organized church”—and we spend some time together. They really want to know the Lord, but there is one thing we came into disagreement about. This is the role of the Scripture in our Christian life. Many of them stopped reading Scripture altogether, saying that since we have the Spirit, we do not need Scriptures. I can agree with them to a point that Scriptures are much abused by religion, but I do not see that rejecting the Scriptures is the solutions. I am wondering if you had a similar experience and if you have any advice for me. I’d really appreciate your help!

Samuel

Hi Samuel… my my my NO WAY. I have only a brief moment here, but I’ll just say this. They are in peril for such a position against the Scriptures! Jesus said HE would not judge us, HIS WORD would (John 12:48), and JESUS quoted Scripture often! Sixty years AFTER the Spirit was given, in about 90AD, John spoke in the Revelation about adding to and subtracting from the Word as spiritual suicide. What is the ultimate “subtracting”—but to be APATHETIC towards the Word of God! The Bible was GOD’S IDEA, and it was so “from the beginning” according to John 1—before there was Time or an Earth. GOD knew we would need some clarity so that people’s emotions and prejudices and delusions could never rule and combat with one another.

The best way to summarize the combined role of the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit that I can think of is here in 1Peter1:

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

The Scriptures are THE Road Map, and the Holy Spirit says, “You are HERE”. Without the map, we don’t know where “HERE” is, and without the Spirit of Christ, we don’t know where we are on the map, so the map is not helpful. BOTH ARE NECESSARY.

The Spirit, the Word, and the Blood—these THREE testify. It will lead to serious atrophy and then devastation to take a posture that we do NOT need the “Map” of the Word, but only need the “You are here, here, or there, or maybe there” of the “Spirit”. Humans are not trustworthy with all of their feelings, and JESUS HIMSELF VALIDATED THE SCRIPTURES OFTEN!

Those who Know God will Know the Scriptures as Jesus and fisherman such as Peter did. And THEN we can “search intently and with the greatest of care”! Simultaneously look to Jesus in His Spirit to “find out what the Spirit of Christ is pointing towards.” THAT’S WHERE LIFE AND ADVENTURE AND PEACE AND SAFETY AND POWER are. : )
