Taking the Lord’s Name in Vain

10/11/2025

The phrase “take the name” in Exodus 20:7 encompasses much more than just verbally uttering God’s name. It refers to the broader concept of representing or bearing God’s authority, reputation, and character in both words and actions.

Broader Meaning
Living in a way that honors God’s character: The core idea is that God’s people are marked by His name, which signifies His presence, authority, and reputation. Misusing or treating His name disrespectfully includes living hypocritically or failing to reflect His holiness. Representing God faithfully: When the Israelites or believers claim to follow God, they are expected to carry His name with integrity. Any dishonorable actions or words that tarnish His reputation are considered a form of taking His name in vain.

The commandment regarding “taking the Lord’s Name in vain” is not simply about “saying” it in vain... but also means “taking” in the same way a wife “takes” the name of her husband. IF we are going to “take” (wear) His name, we need to represent and emanate His character and life. And that cannot be externally imitated. The external “mask wearing” is to take His name in vain, and it is repulsive to Him.
