Teaching: Building the Ship With Love and Commitment Part 1

“Man does not live by bread alone, but he lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” We must have a commitment in our hearts and in our minds that we will see to it that everyone in our sphere of experience gets fed well. We must have a commitment to love people and a commitment to the patience of understanding God's counsel and then being able to patiently lead people through God's counsel on a day to day basis, whether corporately or individually. “You all ought to be teachers by now.” All God’s people are committed to being workmen, approved by God, following God's commission to us to go and teach--to lay out a comprehensive, thorough explanation of the counsel of God regarding a particular subject. Exhortation and prophetic utterance are puffs of air in the sails to help move the ship, but the ship is built out of the planks of the solid teaching of God's counsel and his ways. So be like Peter who erred on the side of activity which is far more God's heart than erring on the side of passivity. He would much rather you try and fail than to be so wise and so spiritual that you err continuously on the side of passivity. He would rather you be a little wild-eyed and crazy. As long you are correctable and as long as you are resilient and you bounce back quickly rather than have a pity-party. If we are really about pleasing the Father, if that is our primary goal rather than just not making mistakes, and if Peter is the man that the Father, through Jesus, chose as the model starting place, then let's make it a goal to be a little more like that. Jesus called us to go and teach--lay it out. Lay out a thorough, patient, comprehensive thought of God. Lay out the planks of the ship and tar them together with our hearts, our compassion, our love for God's people and God's plan and purposes. Perhaps there are some around you who are a little malnourished. Maybe they have been exhorted this way and been admonished that way, but they need substance underneath it. Take the time to build the substance underneath it. Maybe it's not their fault. Maybe they are puffing into the sails, but the ship has not been built as thoroughly as it should have been. Let's take the time to lay it all out for them and make sure all God’s sheep find green pastures.
