Two Trees, Two Responses

speech bubble representing person 1 talking“This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” Then he says, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds.” And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices. (Hebrews 10:16-18)

When I read that, I was like, “Wow, that means not just past sins, but present and future ones, too. Sins forgiven for all my life. If that doesn’t instill some confidence.”

And then, the next verse, “We can go boldly into the most holy place because of the blood.” Bold confidence—not tip-toeing with one eye closed—hoping not to be struck by lightning. That would belittle what Jesus has done and the high price He paid. It feels too crazy to say it, but I’ve been pure all my life, including every day going forward. All and only because of Jesus. Because He didn’t call 12 legions of angels to come get Him when He could have. Because He said, “Not my will but yours be done.” A life lived always wanting to do one more thing that pleases Him—obedience—is the only logical thing to do, not a threat.

Tree number two in the Garden, life and relationship: all of that above is true and much more.

Prodigal number one, “I’m sorry I did that Father, but it’s your fault and my brother’s fault and you all need to accept some responsibility. It’s not totally my fault because...”: Again, none of that above applies.

Prodigal number two, “Father I’m so sorry. I am unworthy...”: all of that good news above applies, and far more.
