All Enoch Had…. Was GOD!

7/27/2025

This morning it struck me that Enoch is a perfect example of “every man being without excuse,” like was discussed in the Love, Freedom, Disgust, and the Righteousness of God recording.

All that Enoch had available that he even could respond to was the Creation around him and whatever grace God gave him to open his eyes. And he became God’s friend!

Some notes I wrote down.

Enoch didn’t have the scriptures, the law, the covenant. All of that would come later. All Enoch had was God. And somehow, that was enough.

The verb “walked” doesn’t just mean to walk physically. It’s a lifestyle of continual intimate fellowship with God. Some scholars describe it as “walking back and forth” with God, like one would walk daily with a close friend. So this brief phrase (“walked with God”) is rich in meaning! Enoch lived in constant, close fellowship with God for 300 years.

Enoch didn’t have much to look back at to build his faith on, but he chose to respond to the grace God gave him, and walked with God! Faith is a conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11). That’s why Enoch is in the hall of fame.

A hallmark of true faith is a willingness to surrender to the grace we are given. Enoch’s walk with God wasn’t based on what he knew. There wasn’t much to “know.” His faith was based on WHO He trusted! We are invited into that walk of faith, too.

How can you be faithful with the grace you’ve been given? Faith doesn’t need to be flashy. Just faithful.
