Artificial Intelligence and "Artificial Spirituality"?

2/1/2025

Some nuggets of conversation regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and artificial spirituality (AS) for spiritual interpretation of Bible verses as an easy way.

speech bubble representing person 1 talking...I know the scriptures are alive and I want JESUS to speak through them to me. AI can’t do that. I didn’t want to swing either out of fear, though, because it’s also been helpful. So, I wondered if you might have a thought?

If I did ask chatGPT a question about how something applies in a practical way, as in giving me an example... it was just to see what some possibilities are. I felt like I wasn’t afraid to use discernment. (So-and-so) tends to be afraid, and I don’t know if they would have discernment. But maybe I’m playing with fire a little bit and trusting in my own ability, too? I have been “Listening” as I use it.

And Koine Greek is a dead language, unused anywhere in the world for many hundreds of years. Do you really want to be asking a pagan dead database spiritual questions and for spiritual summaries? I’m not saying it can never be used for anything, but the laziness of using ChatGPT to summarize Bible verses really makes my stomach turn if that’s the go-to.

speech bubble representing person 1 talkingNo, I don’t want to do that. I was already looking at my heart, and the “fear of not understanding” that drives me to get answers is eating from the wrong tree. Instead, the tree of life which is trust and relationship. And I saw that about myself already. Thanks for the help.

While I would say that the AI music and art has been a gift to me because it can quickly put music or art to thoughts I want to ponder and sing and put before my eyes every day, I still started filing AI songs in a folder that says, “AI—But I will not offer to God that which costs me nothing.”
