Giving, Sacrificially and Creatively

11/13/2002

We have tithed 10% for years and years, but for the past several years we have not “attended a church.” So, we just send our 10% “here and there.” : ) We are sure we are missing something! We know we’re not just tithing out of obligation—we really do want to give our money. But, it feels like we’re just doing something—not being inside of it.

“10%” (the actual definition of “the tithe”) is not a New Testament idea or teaching, but only an Old Testament “shadow of the Realities that are in Christ.” However, GIVING as you’re prospered, and sacrificially, for the Purposes of God…that, of course, is VERY “New Covenant.” : ) Now, as you’ve realized, it is a little “trickier” to do that if you don’t have a basket passed in front of you during a holy day service. SO, what to do? : ) Well, I would set it aside if I were you, and try to find some ways to advance His Kingdom in your area, by both acts of compassion (especially with women and children) and in getting Important things to read into the hands of folks in your area, both to unbelievers, and religious organizations. Also, if you know some who are working in legitimate ways overseas in third world countries (and are not absorbing a penny for themselves, salaries, etc., under the guise of “overhead” from that which is designated for those poor overseas), then you could ride “piggy back” by asking them to add your gift to theirs. Those are SOME ideas, anyway. Thanks for writing—it was genuinely good to hear from y’all. : )

In His Love and Provision,
